cartoonmayhem @ 10:11 am: I wonder if the word Asatru has fallen out of popularity because…
…Because some right wing Neo-Nazi has parked the name in Europe. If so, that's a weak reason. Not one individual should be so dictating about what the rest of us do. But…I also wonder if the term Asatru has fallen out of favour because so many kindreds who used the term then busted up, as kindreds seem to do alot in North America, and people soured on the word. Is Asatru, the word more popular in Europe than North America? What do European Asatru call themselves.

Is there a better term than Asatru (which acknowledges the Aesir but not the Vanir) and also the too-generic word "Heathen."

I think the reason Asatru has fallen out of use is that for the last 20 yrs more forms of N.European Ways have been appearing in the US mainly than the Modern creation mostly by Mr McNallen. I used to be ASatru. I now consider myself Heathen because I don't do all the things I was taught by my kindred a good Asatruar does anymore.
A lot of Asatru as Mr McNallen created it was in reaction to Wicca and so was influenced by it. The Wheel of the Yr when the Lore holds only 3 festivals, the hammer Rite, The modern Blot that needs no clergy, etc. There is much more Lore available now than even when I "Came Home" 19 yrs ago, let alone in the 70's when he began constructing Asatru.
Personally? I form my Practice as I figure a solitary farmer would. A Blot is something that happens x3 a yr(at best). Offerings for help of certain Regin for certain problems, as well as the Land Wights. Just "hanging" with the Tivar. That sort of stuff.
Cheers,
Pat

I lean toward Norse Pagan just because I get fewer blank looks that way.

True, but you could find yourself in a circle chanting "Eko-Eko-Azerak" in a faux-Swedish accent ala 'The Muppet Show';>

I've distanced myself from the term simply because it's not an accurate description of my beliefs. Like, I'm fulltrui to Loki and I believe that all the pantheons are kicking around and deserve respect. So will I like the Aesir well enough, I'm not true to them.

Also, I've run into a lot of people I want to distance myself from in the Asatru community, and it simply doesn't stop with just that religion. Sadly, that may have pushed me away from the term as well?
